About the Guild
On July 7, 1986 a meeting was held at the Old Church Gallery to consider setting up a quilt guild. Catherine Pauley gave an outline of things to be considered and the following was adapted as our "purpose":
The Old Church Galley Quilting Guild shall come together as a group whose main purpose shall be to:
There were approximately 12 members in the beginning. Meetings were held monthly at the Old Church Gallery, which at that time was in the OLD Presbyterian Church on Main Street.
Programs
We have a featured program each month, either a guest speaker, a lecture, demonstrations or hands-on activity. Our speakers have included both regionally and nationally known teachers, some of whom are members of our own guild.
The guild is currently working on a Raffle Quilt which will be donated to our meeting place, the Jacksonville Center. See pictures of the Raffle Quilt Blocks
Visit the Programs page for the latest information on recent and upcoming programs.
Show and Tell
Each month we also have an opportunity to present our quilting accomplishments at show and tell. It is always fun and exciting to see what members of the guild have been doing.
Annual Activities
Each year the Old Church Gallery Quilter's Guild sponsors a Quilt Show, which is held in conjunction with the Woman's Club annual Arts and Crafts Fair. The show displays over 150 entries from across the US which include every sort of quilt from traditional to contemporary, and ranging from large bed quilts, to miniature quilts, with an always impressive display of wearable art. Each year we also have a featured quilt artist.
Another local show, the Mountain Comforts Quilt Show, is held each year as part of the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival in Ferrum VA. The show includes antique and contemporary quilts which are judged by an NQA certified judge. Monetary prizes and fabulous, unique ribbons will be awarded in numerous categories. There is also a Young Quilter division for youth aged 13 or younger.
