Fantasy Flowers: 2005 Old Church Gallery Guild Challenge
The Old Church Gallery Quilt Guild will participate in the Quilt University Guild Challenge as their 2005 Guild Challenge. In December of each year, QU will announce a new challenge, created by Quilt U instructor, Lily Kerns. All guilds are invited to take the challenge, display the completed quilts and choose a winner. Quilt University will provide each guild with a Certificate of Participation, which can be presented to all quilters who participate in the challenge. The winning quilt will become that guilds entry in the Quilt U Guild Challenge Virtual Show.
2005 Quilt University Guild Challenge: INVENT A FLOWER
Phase One: Make a Quilt
Your Flower-themed quilt may look botanical, whimsical or be out of this world. Your flower can stand alone, be part of a scene or abstract arrangement.
Your piece may have added dimension and be embellished with the materials of your choice. The quilt must have three layers and there must be quilting connecting the layers. The edges must be finished but the finish does not have to be a traditional binding.
Size: no smaller than 28" x 28" and no larger than 45" x 45".
Due Date: Quilts will be shown at the September 19, 2005 meeting.
Quilts must be finished, ready to hang, and entered in the Quilt Show, registration deadline October 4, 2005. You do need to fill in a Quilt Show entry form and pay your registration fee to be eligible for judging.
Phase Two: Enter your Quilt for Judging in the Guilds October Quilt Show
The quilts will be judged by our quilt show judges.
Judging Guidelines: the main consideration should be creativity and originality. Does the piece reflect the challenge theme? Quality workmanship is important but does not have to mean sticking to traditional quilting techniques. Machine quilting, for example, is often executed with stitches of different lengths. This can be the intent of the maker to enhance the design. Use of color and visual impact are also important considerations.
Phase Three: Submit the Winning Quilt to Quilt U for the Virtual Quilt Show
Digital pictures will be taken of the winning quilt while it is hanging at the show for submission to the Quilt University Virtual Quilt Show.
The winner must provide the following information to Susan Brittingham by November 1, 2005:
Susan Brittingham will submit the photos and information to Quilt University. As a faculty member of QU, she is not permitted to participate in the Challenge.
Quilt University will maintain a public calendar, which will include information on all exhibits of the Quilt U Guild Challenge. Guilds may send all information to dean@quiltuniversity.com.
Phase Four: See the Winning Quilts Online and Vote for Your Favorite
The 2005 challenge season will end November 30, 2005, when all submission must be received by QU. The Quilt U Guild Challenge Show will open at www.quiltuniversity.com on January 1 and run through January 14, 2006. Winners will be chosen by those visiting the site. All visitors to the virtual show will have one vote. So visit the site and cast your vote for your favorite quilt. The top three individual winners will be awarded cash prizes: First place, $200; Second place, $100; and Third place, $75.
