Old Church Gallery Quilt Guild Challenges
The challenge for 2008 was voted on in the February business meeting
and we have adopted the following challenge:
The Quilter’s Eco Scrap Bag Recycling Extravaganza Challenge 2008
Step 1. MAKE A BLOCK Step 2. Prepare a grab bag. At the February 18 meeting we will have a scrap swap. If you have scraps you are willing to swap
or give away, bring them to the meeting.
Step 3. SWAP on March 3 Step 4. Make Something! Step 5. Complete your challenge for the Quilt Show Although it is not a hard and fast rule, for the new project, please try to use scraps,
recycled materials and supplies-on-hand as much as possible (80-90%), and try not to buy a lot of new
stuff to complete the project. (optional) Estimate what percentage of your materials are recycled or scraps.
If we find there are some new quilters who wish to participate, who do not have their own supply of scraps,
I think those of us who are slowly being buried under our scraps will be happy to share. We can have informal
scrap swaps at any meeting. If you wish to ask others to swap for specific types or colors of scraps, that is acceptable.
The Finished Size of your quilts should be no smaller than 24" and no larger than 60" on any side.
It does not have to be square. Garments and accessories do not have side requirements.

2007 GUILD CHALLENGE
The 2007 Quilt University Challenge is
"Poetry in Motion". Take a line from any poem or song
and create a quilt that expresses it. Your quilt can be representational or abstract. The title of your
quilt will be the words upon which the quilt design is based. Your quilt can be any shape but the total
perimeter cannot measure more than 180” (If your quilt is square, that would be 45” on each side). If you
do not wish to send your quilt to the QU Viewer's choice show, then there are no size restrictions.
You may use any methods or techniques you like, but the work must be original and
you must complete all of it yourself.
2006 Challenge The Old Church Gallery Quilter's Guild was 20 years old in 2006.
Our annual challenge celebrated our 20th anniversary while also
participaing in the Annual Quilt University Challenge. The rules for Our Guild's 2006 Challenge
followed the rules set out for the Quilt University Challenge with the added provison that
your entry include Emerald green and White to commemorate our 20th anniversary. See all the 2006 Challenge Quilts
2005 Quilt University Guild Challenge: INVENT A FLOWER See the 2005 Challenge Rules Past Challenges The guild has participated in some wonderful
challenges in years past. If you have photos of past challenges, please send them in. It
is fun to remember some of the great old challenges of the past and the wonderful quilts
that sprang from them. Some poplar challenges included: A Millennium Challenge in 2000 Birthday Challenge in 1999 The Color Challenge Everyone selected, sight unseen from a paper bag, a
combination of two colors. They had to make a quilt using the two colors. The combinations
included Scarlet and Purple, Turquoise and Peach, and everyone's favorite: Chartreuse and
Orange. You were allowed to trade colors with someone else if you could find someone who was
willing to trade. Quilt a Camel Challenge We had a committee design this challenge. Five
people in the guild each contributed an element to the challenge. Since a Camel is a horse
designed by a committee we called it the Quilt a Camel Challenge. The elements of the
challenge included a log cabin, a pine tree, an architectural element, the color chartreuse, and ???
Go to your scrap bag and MAKE A BLOCK from SCRAPS, bits and pieces
The block can be any size over 6" and up to 16" (finished size). It can be any shape, and does not have
to be square. It can be traditional, wonky or crazy patched, foundation pieced, appliqued or pieced, anything goes.
Put your block into a (recycled) bag and bring it to the guild meeting on March 3.
(The bag should not be transparent, so it will be a surprise for whoever opens it). Add some more scraps to the
bag if you wish. Orphan blocks from old projects are fair game. If you absolutely cannot make a block in time
for the meeting, then prepare a grab bag of nice scraps.
Suggestion: make sure the scraps are usable sizes: we all have our own standards but anything smaller
than 2" square is too small to pass on for others to use and larger is better. Don't pass on scraps you would not
use yourself either in regard to their size or quality.
At the March 3 meeting, the guild will have either a simple grab bag SWAP or a “Chinese auction”
(like at the Christmas party for gifts) to distribute the blocks.
Photograph the block you were given so we will know what it looked like BEFORE.
Each participant will take home someone else’s block and incorporate the block you take home into a project
The block can be used as is, it can be cut up, it can be incorporated into a new project in any way.
It might be the center of a medallion quilt or it may be one block of many, it can go into the lining of a purse
or garment. Make clothing, purses, wall quilts, home accessories, love quilts, bed quilts, anything goes.
Have your quilt, garment or whatever ready in time for judging in the guild Quilt show in October. All objects
may be entered into the challenge category.

Elaine Boyd with her winning quilt "Magical Abandonment"

Make a quilt that references your birthday. It must include the color of your birthstone
and
the flower of your birth month. It may have astrological imagery.

Can anyone remember the rest?
