I was born and raised in Munich, Germany, the home of the Octoberfest. My older daughter Lilian was born there on my first wedding anniversary --- what a surprise --- the midwife found it very funny. When Lilian was two years old we moved to Boston for the first of my husbands post doc positions. I started quilting there and used the two years to take as many classes as possible. I met more teachers and learned more quilting techniques during our following two years in Oxford, England. I started teaching quilt classes when we moved back to Munich in 1998 and organized my first quilt festival there. We came to Blacksburg 6 years ago --- did you know that quilt fabric makes a great packing material for dishes? My younger daughter Judith was already born in Radford - the only true American in the family! I am active in several quilt groups in the area, I teach quilt classes for the YMCA in Blacksburg and organize the Blue Ridge Quilt Festival, now in its third year.
With both girls in school until 3 PM I have so much more freedom to quilt... quilt... quilt!
I have only been quilting for about three years. I was first inspired to make quilts by a Christmas gift of a quilt my daughter made for me. She is totally self-taught. She just bought a book of patterns and made one. I started reading and working on simple things, but very soon took Karin Taubers sampler quilt class. That same year, I took a crazy quilt class and a paper foundation piecing class, all from Karin. I also began buying books and magazines, and joined the Old Church Gallery Quilt Guild to learn all I could. I quilt primarily to make presents for my family, and so have very few of my quilts. My husband, John, and I live in Prices Fork and have five adult children between us; there is always a reason to make someone a gift.
I have been quilting "forever", since my Mother and both sisters also were quilters, I just grew up with it. I am also one of the Charter Members of the guild, and we have really come a LONG way since then. I have done commission work, always machine piecing, hand quilting, machine quilting, finishing projects and repair work (for others_mine still need to be done!) I own quite a few quilts, most of them family pieces. I think my UFO's will outnumber anyone else in this guild!!!! My husband has been retired for several years, and thanks to his help, especially in the kitchen, I have been able to do more in the "quilt" line and still have a bookkeeping business in my home.
I was born in the Bethel community of Montgomery County, then later my parents bought a farm in the Pilot community. I received my elementary education from Pilot Elementary School and graduated from Auburn High School. In 1957, I obtained a B.S. from Radford University (College in my day) in Home Economics and chemistry. I taught 30.5 years in Montgomery County and ½ year in North Carolina; 28.5 of these years was teaching elementary children. I retired in June 2001. My husband, Jim, and I have been married for 48 years and raised three boys. We have four grandchildren 11 years and younger whom I enjoy very much. One of my interests in life has been sewing mostly for relaxation and enjoyment. I also like to garden, read, travel and participate in activities with family and friends. I especially enjoy doing in depth studies of the Bible with the book of Revelations my latest endeavor.
I grew up on Long Island where in the 7th grade I learned how to sew. I took Home Ec. through high school and majored in Human Nutrition and foods at VA Tech.
The first quilt I made was "grandmother's flower garden" about 23 years ago for my aunt. Since then I've made a number of baby quilts, lap quilts, and bed size quilts. I favor the traditional with a "twist". Since becoming a member of the guild I have become interested in landscape or pictorial quilts and have tried several of them. I'm also learning to work outside the "box".
